Fiction about the Jacobites

A collection of old fiction about the Jacobites, which may be of interest to fans of The Flight of the Heron and Kidnapped.

For the purposes of this collection ‘old’ means roughly pre-1960, with occasional exceptions for a very good later book; ‘fiction’ means it’s intended as a story rather than a factual account, and includes dramatised history as well as totally invented fiction; ‘Jacobites’ is defined broadly to cover the whole history of the Jacobite movement from 1688 to the later eighteenth century; and ‘about’ means that Jacobite characters and events are at least reasonably prominent, if not the main focus. This list is very much non-comprehensive; if you know of any other books that you think should be on it, let me know!

The list is arranged alphabetically by author’s surname, and books by the same author are listed in order of publication.

Since most of these books are old enough to be in the public domain, I’ve linked to free online copies where available—text ebooks if possible and PDFs otherwise, and audiobooks if there is one.

I’ve also included links to reviews written by me and Luzula over on Dreamwidth. Be advised that these reviews may contain spoilers.

Asterisks* indicate books which I especially enjoyed and would recommend.
