The Flight of the Heron fanfic

My fanfiction for The Flight of the Heron by D. K. Broster. The stories are a mixture of gen about various characters and Ewen/Keith slash, and are divided up roughly into categories by style or type of fic.

Filling in the Gaps

Canon-compliant missing scene and backstory fics. Gen or pre-slash, mostly fairly short.

What Makes Heroic Strife. G, 1,422 words. Night in the hut at Kinlochiel; or, how Keith learns about Ewen's sleep-talking habit.

At Ruthven Barracks. T, 3,299 words. An episode from the march of Prince Charles's army towards the Lowlands. Contains non-graphic death of an original character.

Such a Stranger. G, 1,788 words. Mr Fosdyke comes home.

Thy Kingdom's Pearl. G, 7,947 words. Returning to her childhood home in the wake of the 1719 Jacobite Rising and of her own family's griefs, Margaret Cameron finds work to do and a new life to build up.

That Tells of Winter's Tales and Mirth. T, 5,694 words, gen and Ewen/Keith. Seven Decembers in the life of Ewen Cameron. Collection of ficlets including backstory, within-canon missing scenes and canon-divergent future.

OTP Fic ♥︎

Indulgently romantic Ewen/Keith stories. Generally canon-divergent, either containing or assuming a fix-it for the novel's ending.

Up in the Grey Hills. T, 5,972 words. Searching for Charles Edward Stuart in the hills above Arisaig, Keith Windham encounters an entirely different enemy—and an unexpected rescue. Or, what if Lachlan's timing hadn't been quite so opportune?

It Will Be Summer. M, 4,849 words. A year after they parted near Arisaig, Ewen and Keith meet again. A sequel to 'Up in the Grey Hills'. Contains one not-especially-explicit sex scene.

On That One Spot of Earth. G, 2,072 words. Keith Windham reflects on the surroundings and occupations of a peaceful retirement.

That Cup of Cold Water. G, 674 words. Returned to his home and with Keith by his side, Ewen visits Loch na h-Iolaire.

Six foot two (without stocking or shoe). G, 262 words. Keith finds that his new relationship with Ewen takes a bit of getting used to.

A Valued Gift. G, 1,066 words. Huddled in his enemy’s own cloak (for its real ownership, luckily for his peace of mind, he never discovered)... —In a happier future, Keith gets a chance to discover where the cloak Ewen gave him in Edinburgh really came from.

Fic as Meta

Stories written primarily to develop ideas about the characters. Mostly Ewen/Keith, but not necessarily as happy about it as the previous set of fics.

No Unfitting Anchorage. T, 11,612 words. At Morar, Keith gets the chance to make his 'decision too cruel'... and has to live with it afterwards. Meanwhile, Ewen works out the meaning of a decision of his own.

No Man Can Shun It. T, 9,110 words. Time passes; the heron flies on. Contains non-graphic major character death. Uses material from Broster's other books The Gleam in the North and (briefly) The Dark Mile.

The Two Loves. T, 14,175 words. Ewen is tried and put to death at Carlisle. Alison and Keith live on. Contains non-graphic major character death.

Adventure Stories

Longer (10,000+ words) fics with adventure plots. Mostly gen with background/pre-slash Ewen/Keith.

A Grimly Ghost. T, 18,526 words. Lachlan is killed by Loch Tarff, when he attacks Keith and Keith shoots him in self-defence, after all. But that's not going to stop him...

The Sun of the Mind. G, 19,945 words. After his escape at High Bridge, Ewen is recaptured by a redcoat named Captain Jermain. Meanwhile Keith is sent on a mission to capture Charles Edward Stuart, and finds himself in the neighbourhood of Windlestrae Manor... but neither Keith nor Ewen can guess what meetings and choices will result. This fic is a crossover with White Cockades by Edward Prime-Stevenson; you don't need to have read that book to understand the fic, but it does contain spoilers.

That Loyalty of Friendship. Being the Adventures of David Balfour, Ewen Cameron and other Notable Persons in and about the Year 1753: How Keith Windham saw a Quarrel made and mended; how Mr Balfour took a bold Step, and suffer’d a great Misfortune, in which there was yet a great Happiness; the History of Alan Breck Stewart and Dr Archibald Cameron, with divers other Jacobites; of Falsehood and Truth in Friendship and Politics; and treating also of Amity and Love between Jacobite and Whig. T, 118,175 words. A crossover with Kidnapped.
